杰里米•西尔曼（Jeremy Silman）1954年出生于美国德克萨斯州，1988年成为国际象棋国际大师，曾夺得美国公开赛冠军，并曾经担任美国国家青年国际象棋队的教练。2001年，西尔曼还担任了《哈利波特与魔法石》中的国际象棋对战设计。

曾分别担任北京大学学生国际象棋协会副会长和团支书的羽阳、林诗敏、王思雨与张乃卿等4位译者均来自北大学生国象社团。该社团成立25年来，始终积极弘扬国象文化，促进国际交流，推动创建北大国象队和国象课程，在校内外推广国象运动；在社团指导教师李晓鹏的长期带领下，北大国际象棋综合发展体系已居全球大学领先地位，曾获世界棋王卡尔森盛赞。

  适合等级分在1500-2000左右的爱好者，虽然是理论，写得还算有趣，就是把棋局分解，从不同的角度综合分析，化繁为简。书名中的reassess ，翻译成 “重新解读”更合适

  最重要的一点是：这本书不适合新手看。作者里面的例子对我来说有点难了，我是摆棋盘打谱，平均一个小时看十页。看这本书之前最好有一些残局基础，很多例子掐头去尾，盘中部分来表达作者的策略，但是我不理解为何一方就比另一方更具优势，这种优势可能是多一个兵，也可能是兵型更优，所以先学残局后，可以更好得理解这本书。

  Writing a sequel to so famous a classical literature work as Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is not a task to be taken lightly with the writer’s reputation on the stake. Numerous attempts have been made but nothing great comes out of it. Therefore, it’s understandable that contemporary writers have shunned away from stepping into Austen’s shoes. When news came that well-renowned prolific British crime novelist, P. D. James, now at the age of 92, was going to write a Pride and Prejudice sequel, I was very surprised – is she going out of her mind? But reputation is what she can afford at such a senior age. There she went and Death Comes to Pemberley was released in 2011.

  I was all anticipation with a bit of anxiety before I opened the first page. As one among billions of Austen’s fans, I would abhor if the main characters, Mr./Mrs. Darcy, Mr./Mrs. Bingley, Mr./Mrs. Bennet, Mr./Mrs. Wickham differ from Austen’s original creation. Furthermore, publicized as a crime and thriller, the novel will also be valued upon its twists and turns in the plot. No book is undergoing greater scrutiny than Death Comes to Pemberley.

  The novel starts with a brief re-capture of the major events in Pride and Prejudice leading up to the marriage of Darcy and Elizabeth, and Bingley and Jane. For a quarter of the novel, P.D. James went to great length in painting a post-marriage life of Darcy and Elizabeth, settling into domesticity in Pemberley. I shall say what James imaged for their married life is certainly plausible. In addition, the author details some key Pemberley servants and tenants, setting the background for a mystery to unfold shortly – a body is found in the woodland on the Pemberley estate before the eve of Lady Anne’s ball, an important event for the Pemberley locality. To Mr./Mrs. Darcy’s dismay, George and Lydia Wickham are involved. Scandals and infamy haunt Pemberley.

  I am revealing no spoilers here. Another quarter of the book is describing the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the victim’s body, and the rest focuses mainly on the ensuing murder trials. Unlike normal crime and thriller novels, there are not much investigations going on in Death Comes to Pemberley. Very little happens exceeding readers’ expectations. Of course, the truth must be revealed somehow but the author opts to use cheap tricks, not to say subtle clues, unexpected twists and turns as often seen in James’ other works. I have the feeling that the murder mystery is sidelined as the focus is more on response and reactions of Darcy and Elizabeth and some other leading characters in the story.

  Whether the characters stay true to Austen’s original creation? Mr. Bingley is only a minor role in the story, nothing much to comment on. Jane is her usual self, very generous and gentle, almost to the point of stereotyping. Mr. Darcy doesn’t appear to me to be a very much wise and powerful landlord as I feel in Pride and Prejudice. Elizabeth lacks a bit of that resilience and spite. Lydia’s hysterics are overplayed. Colonel Fitzwilliam is by far the most different from Austen’s creation. How different, you shall read and judge yourself. Perhaps the only character that is most faithful to the original is George Wickham, still a womanizing scoundrel, but then the story of his bravery in the army is highly unlikely considering his character – he would never risk his life for anything.

  I am afraid to conclude that Death Comes to Pemberley does not live up to James’ usual quality of crime and thriller works. Perhaps it’s because of her age. But one does need to know when to stop, isn’t it?
