  典型的英国学院派历史教科书，视野开阔，论述深刻，风格四平八稳，作者是少有的钻研德国历史的女学者（历来汉斯国的历史专家基本都是男的，女人有几个对那些血雨腥风的重口味帝国史感兴趣），这本书对两德分裂时期社会、政治和民心的对比研究内容相当宝贵，相当具体而生动，因为众所周知的原因，这一时期的中文相关资料确实太少了，但文笔比较枯燥，纯正课本文风，金句很少，大段大段的分析和叙述有点沉闷，对普通读者来说考验耐心
