Kathryn Hinds，When Kathryn Hinds was a child, her Swedish grandfather entertained her with stories of the Vikings and their, daring voyages, and she has been interested in the Vikings ever since. Ms. Hinds grew up near Rochester, New York, then moved to New York City to study music andwriting at Barnard College. She did graduate work in comparative literature at the City University of New York, where she enjoyed taking a course in Old Norse. For several years she has worked as a freelance editor of children's books. She also writes poetry, which has been published in anumber of magazines. Ms. Hinds now lives in the north Georgia mo.untains with her husband, their son, a dog, and a varying number of cats. Her other books in this series are The Incas, The Ancient Romans, The Celts ofNorthern Europe, and India's Gupta Dynasty.

  他的盘算很简单：松鼠值二十戈比，而树却一文不值，花十五分钟就砍倒了。树倒下了，松鼠跳到另一棵树上，消失了，大概躲到树穴里去了。第二棵树又倒下了。往往打死一只松鼠要砍倒十棵甚至更多的树木。以我们的经济目光来看，这是多么野蛮的砍伐呀！但是在那里，在树林里，一天中猎人十分费劲才能找到十只松鼠，砍下的树木就像沧海之滴水，在没有价格可言的大片森林中是算不了什么的。

  为了松鼠，树木就这样被砍伐了，十年树木啊，令人痛心，也就是俄罗斯森林资源丰富。

  这块半干的混杂着汗水和焦油的肉对这只强健的鹰有着一种莫名的力量：它忘却了自己的群山，自己的家庭，自己的温暖而丰盛的猎物，飞到了马梅尔汉的鞍座上，让他给自己眼睛戴了皮套，让他给自己系上锁链。马梅尔汉把这块富有魔力的肉又藏进了皮靴筒，心安理得地取下了兔子。他们就是这样驯养雄鹰的。

  他们把雄鹰蒙上眼睛，绑在绳子上。时不时地动一下绳子，让雄鹰失去平衡。不给它吃的，只让它看看肉。这样几天下来雄鹰被折磨的精疲力尽，最后被人类驯服而失去自由。我的心里很不滋味。
