    刘裕生活的时代属于中国历史上最为纷乱动荡的年代之一,在士族高门当政的东晋晚期,刘裕以出身低级士族的一介中下级军官,因时际会,诛桓楚,平卢循,收巴蜀,灭南燕,亡后秦,建立起属于自己的国家,同时既是南朝历史的开创者,也是东晋门阀政治的掘墓人。

    刘裕的形象,我们更关注和熟悉的是战场上无敌统帅以及四方征讨的赫赫武功,但本书还揭示了刘裕的另一个形象,即手腕高超、心狠手辣的政治家。刘裕出身低微,没有自己的后台资源,在他一生的奋斗中,他始终重视吸纳各类人才为己所用,既有自己的宗族,也有和自己一同拼杀的战友,还有投靠过来的曾经的敌人,以及愿意投效自己的士族门阀。刘裕的要求只有一条,即无条件服从自己的领袖地位,遵从这一条件都会给予足够的权力和利益,而敢于蔑视和挑战自己权威的人都会进行惩治甚至诛杀。从京口起兵的那一刻,刘裕心中可能就已经萌发了将已经名存实亡的东晋朝廷取而代之的信念,对于阻碍自己的人,无论是自己曾经的亲密战友刘毅、诸葛长民,抑或是东晋皇族司马遵、司马休之,门阀代表谢混,还是东晋的两位废帝,无一例外的都被刘裕置于死地。刘裕从来不惮于用各种或明或暗、或堂皇或卑劣的手段对待自己的敌人,在其高大伟岸的英雄形象下,隐藏着一个冷酷残忍的枭雄本质。
