H. W. Brands is the Dickson Allen Anderson Centennial Professor

of American history at the University of Texas at Austin. He is the

author of many books, among them The First American: The Life

and Times of Benjamin Franklin, which was a finalist for

the Pulitzer Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Award;

T.R.: The Last Romantic, a critically acclaimed

biography of Theodore Roosevelt; and The Age of Gold,

a celebrated history of the California Gold Rush. He lives in

Austin, Texas.

  大町月子是个37岁的单身女子，细节略有粗糙，毫无特长可言，只是个顺应时代的普通女子，因而也“独立”也谈不上。有一日，在小酒店里撞上了昔日国文老师，两人所点菜点小酒完全一样。老师永远是老师的模样，轻轻怪责学生不记得芭蕉的俳句，轻轻埋怨下雨天懒得掏手帕抹去雨水的现代女子，轻轻指出年轻女人不该把臀部说成屁股……作为一个旁观者，我有一种奇特的感受，仿佛他们交往时一切不过是恬淡、不过是小事，但回想起来就会默默惊呼一下：竟然积下了这么多可供回忆的瞬间。当时只道是寻常。大抵就是爱的构成吧。

  忘年爱总有点像是他生之缘，隔着各自此生的回忆和将来，明明知道即便拥有，也不过是拥有残余般的对方，却是根本无法舍弃。两人会点同样的食品，虽然对于巨人队有着截然不同的看法，但站在月子的立场看，似乎只是一种娇啧的方式。老师可以在等待月子的深夜独自沉溺于俳句，也可以郑重其事地要求约会，总之，老师是个看似按部就班的老派人物，却是个情感的主导者。除了在手机问题上，他始终是被月子教导感化的对象。

  和这样一个走过大半辈子的老师相恋，免不了聆听他的前半生故事。老师的前妻像幽灵一样浮现在这本书里，确实有着“颇为奔放的人生”，固执地带领丈夫和儿子去爬山采蘑菇、再任性地吞下笑菇，连蜂蜜柠檬这样的东西也成了前妻任性的作证。有过那样一个妻子的老师，果然是个温吞内敛的人，关于妻子的种种——包括私奔后离奇的死法——都似乎在不经意间吐露，不加任何装饰性的情感附件，但妻子的影子无处不在，蘑菇、海岛、墓园、庭院里恼人的樱花树都已是妻子的另一种物化残余。他和前妻之间的爱，弥留已久，融化成他的魅力。爱上这样的老男人，很可能也不得不去品味他的前任爱人——她绝对不会是情敌，只是部分的他。

  37岁的月子领略到一个老男人的矜持，也许，她和我一样，在第一章节中看到老师冷清家中的收藏品，就已经被那种特殊的氛围所吸引。“怜悯曾为自己辛勤工作的电池”，因而收藏奄奄一息的它们，测电器只能够伤感地证明，它们活不了多久了。连同普通的火车陶壶、样式古板的黑色大皮包、早就被时代淘汰的俳句……老师以此表白了自己情感的余温。也许，月子的出现不是为了能够填补什么，正如他所言，两人间的默契仿佛是他生之缘。虽是今生无法圆满的，却是一种额外补足，所以才会不知所措，才会因犹疑而变得越发隆重。

  月子是可以有别的选择的。她逃避与老师的见面，也应允老同学的约会，但那一切都不过是无效力的平衡，就像一盏早已倾斜的天平，你无论如何在另一头充上什么砝码，都无法改变心已落在他处的事实。新年夜里，她独自行走在归家的路上，突然感到自己变回了儿童，变成了迷路的小孩，只能在心底呼唤老师，如此和年龄不符的幼小、无助只能对老师去说。读到这里的时候，我感到心痛。无论是谁，寻求爱的依靠的时候，都会是这样吧，像个孩子。于是，这份淳厚的、甚至无法加上性爱的忘年之爱，就在这样的瞬间呈现出泪光般的光彩。

  有人说，这是川上弘美所写的“村上春树般的”小说。宁静的生活，暗涌波澜，细密的感触，收纳于酒食器物，在我看来这就是日式文学最典型的人生观。这本书有着极其平淡的开头和结尾，但因为那份深深的忧伤，洁净的言语又像是薄薄的刀锋那样易于割伤光滑岁月的表皮。
