• Poor character development, disappointing plot.

  Often when novelists trying to create a strong female character, they often add a bit of a craziness in them. This is understandable approach for female characters since women often draw their strength from their emotions such as love. As a result, we end up with bunch of female protagonists who are in various state of hysteria. In effort of making them real and strong, the authors often achieve in making them mad with love or grief, and emotion becomes their strength and excuses of making stupid decisions.

  While, Hunger game is different. The book did a very good job in creating one of my favorite female characters: Katniss. She's strong, realistic, and driven by the most primal instinct of survival. Like other female characters, she drew her strength from emotion, love towards her sister and family, her hatred towards the capital. All make her a very interesting antihero, who would do anything to survive while still remain true to her humanity.

  But Book 2 of Hunger Game took a sharp turn for the worst. Katniss, once so strong and resilient, become stupid and hysterical. It is as if the author don't know how to make of this character so she start to try out different common adolescent themes. Katniss is very confused, she didn't know what to do. At one chapter she's back to her old self-preservative self; suddenly page turned she decided to become a martyr. At one chapter she decided she love Gale with all her heart, the next she's willing to die for Peeta. I always understand Katniss has a lot of hatred, which is part of her personality. But getting to the end of the book, she doesn't even know where to direct her anger. She's angry with everyone for no particular reason. She changed from a smart, strong young woman with good conscience into a hysterical mad woman who do stupid things for stupid reason (or no reason at all).

  Once again, author falls into the old cliche of female character creation, using unchecked emotion as motivation and explanation, having character do stupid things to drive the story. I mourn for Katniss, who is utterly destroyed in book 2.

  The plot also suffers from the general confusion of the book. the first half and the second half couldn't be any further away from each other. The plot twist feels forced. I personally feel that the only reason President Snow come up with the plan is because the author don't know what else to write other than a bigger more twisted hunger game. Overall, the story is such a drag. I read every word in book one, but skip lines in book 2. The endless and whinny monologue of Katniss is absolutely unbearable. If character development and various interesting supporting characters save the plot, the character development in second book is weak. I can't believe author start introduce some of the major characters in second half of the book!

  I'm very disappointed at book 2, but since the ending is a cliffhanger, I end up buying book 3 nonetheless. Might as well finish it.
