  2018年在三里屯Page One偶然发现这本书，后来脑袋一热就在亚马逊上下单了。看这本书断断续续一共花了一年多的时间。

  作者是Patrick White，澳大利亚人，一位诺贝尔奖得主，国内并没有翻译出版很多他的书。《Riders in the Chariot》曾译为《乘战车的人》在80年代国内出版过，现在已很难找到中文版。

  作家的笔墨有一种宁静柔美的风格，像英文诗，像无数细微的笔触最终形成某些图案，像夏天午后盯着某个地方入了迷，一种宁静神秘的气氛把你包裹了，向你传递力量，你想起了现在、过去和未来，人类的某些联系。

  翻译、摘抄了一些内容，水平很差，仅供娱乐（同时我也尝试模仿作者写作的文风，感觉是对提升英语写作是不错的）：

  Her hands, almost always dirty and scratched, from the constant need to plunge into operations of importance: encouraging a choked plant to shoot, freeing a fledgling from its shell, breaking an afterbirth - were now hung with dying ants, she observed with some distress. One slithered from her father’s bloodstone ring, which she wore not as a memento to his father, but because its device officially confirmed her ownership of Xanadu.

  但故事安排和文风时常也有点夸张甜腻的过头了。比如工厂老板在犹太人死后也自杀了；比如结尾的这一段：“from behind, her great beam, under the stretchy cardigan, might have appeared something of a joke, except to the few who happen to perceive that she also wore the crown.” 把人捧上天。我个人更乐意看到《罪与罚》中的那一斧头。

  这是一本关于四位“圣人”的书。他们贫穷、力量微弱，但他们是虔诚的信徒，不会在意现世的财富。愿书中人物的信念能够指引读者。

  There is another set of judgement made different from that we valued the earthly world; the evil has been displayed, the good deeds have been recognized, so the readers would receive consolation and confirmation, of the existence of faith, not necessarily in people, but in the elements of nature. Sentences, words, even punctuations once cut the marble, chiseled with the most carefulness, they turned language into the glazed faces and bodies of Bernini’s. The burning flame in the Chariot, will save.
